Environmental assessment of the Fort Chipewyan Solar Farm Site began in the spring of 2019. The project site is located away from the residential portion of Fort Chipewyan, but easily accessible. The area is located within the Boreal Forest and the proposed site is a sandy area with a mixture of Jackpine forest.

Environmental Assessment is a key step in ensuring that the project will not have a negative impact on the environment or the community. This process includes: evaluating the project’s impact on residents and wildlife, including potential noise, potential glare, vegetation assessment and overall feasibility.

The first 3 initial wildlife/bird site surveys were completed in April and May, and 5 more bird site surveys are scheduled before August 15th. Personnel with the Community Based Monitoring (CBM) Teams will assist with the work to facilitate local employment and capacity building.
