With help from the students, the Athabasca Delta Community School is now ready to grow their own vegetables!

On May 25th, 2023 Jonathan Luckhurst with Greenplanet Energy Analytics and Cheyanne Blesse with Three Nations Energy built self-watering garden beds, also known as wicking beds, for the greenhouse that is located behind the Athabasca Delta Community School. They replaced all the old garden beds and installed the 3 wicking beds.

Wicking beds are great to have because they don’t need to be watered as much as normal garden beds. Ideally you only need to water them once every few weeks unless the weather is scorching hot, then you should water them once a week.

Students from the school helped clear out the old soil and got a chance to mix the new soil into the wicking beds where they will then transplant tomato seedlings that they previously started from seed in April.

The greenhouse is still under construction but with help from the students we were able to get the inside finished so they can start on their new gardening projects!
